The Philippine Independence

The proclamation of the independence of the Philippines from the grasp of the Spanish colony occurred on June 12, 1898. It was proclaimed in Cavite and was done through the announcement in public of the Act of declaration independence. On that day Emilio Aguinaldo and his revolutionary forces was given the sovereignty of the country.
The Declaration of Independence by Philippines was not an easy task for the Filipinos. It was a 3 year revolution which began in the year 1896. In those times the Spanish had sealed an agreement with the supporters of the revolution to send Emilio Aguinaldo to Hong Kong as an exile. But the Spanish-American war broke out where the Asiatic Squadron which belonged to the US NAVY sailed to Manila Bay from Hongkong. The fleet was led by Commodore George Dewey. Eventually, they defeated the Spanish through the help of the United States. The victory was declared on May 1, 1898 after the Battle of Manila Bay has decided the defeat of the Spanish colonizers. On the same month Emilio Aguinaldo returned to Philippines escorted by the U.S. Navy.
The Proclamation ceremony occurred in the afternoon and at the familial house of the Aguinaldo family. Their house was located 30km South from Manila. In the ceremony the Philippine flag was spread out. The national flag was originally made from Hong Kong. The unfurling of the flag was then followed by the Marcha Filipina Magdalo being performed. It became the national anthem of the country and is now called Lupang Hinirang. San Francisco de Malabon was the name of the marching band which performed the anthem. It was all written by Julian Felipe.
Meanwhile, it was Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista who wrote, prepared and read the Act of the Declaration of Independence. He composed it and read it all in Spanish. About a hundred people signed the Declaration as witnesses to the proclamation. One of them was an American officer who also observed the ceremony. But later on the declaration was modified. Apolinario Mabini insisted upon it and was acted upon by the Malolos congress. They objected for the Philippines to be held under the influence of the United States in return for protection.
Unfortunately the proclamation had to go through rough times. It was not recognized by the U.S. and Spain. But at the defeat of the Spanish to the Americans, Philippines was yielded to the US as part of the 1898 Treaty of Paris. As a retaliation, the treaty was not recognized by the Philippine Revolutionary Government. This resulted in what is known as the Philippine-American war. But the Philippines lost to the U.S. This happened when the U.S. forces captured Emilio Aguinaldo. Aguinaldo was persuaded then to sign and agree to hand over the sovereignty of the country. On July 2, 1902 it was telegraphed by Elihu Root, U.S. Secretary of War, that all provincial governments were successfully established all over the Philippines. He added that the only exception were those places occupied by the tribes of the Moros. They have been resisting the U.S. forces for a number of years.
The National Library of Philippines currently houses the Declaration. Just like any other document in the said library, the Declaration requires permission for it to be seen by viewers. It is a series of declarations of independence which consists also of the United Statse Declaration of Independence.

The Black Nazarene has many names. In Spanish it is called the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno. In Filipino it is known as Mahal na Itim na Nazareno or Itim na Nazareno. But its formal name in English is “Our Father Jesus Nazarene”. The black Nazarene is wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ. It is a life-sized figure carrying the cross. Filipino Catholics believe the wooden figure to be possessed with miraculous nature. In the beginning the Black Nazarene had a fair complexion. But because of a fire that burned the ship it was carried on, it turned black. Luckily, the sculpture survived. The sculptor of the image has always been unanimous. According to history, it was brought to Manila from Acapulco, Mexico via a galleon ship.      Originally, the Black Nazarene had an identical twin sculpture which was brought to Manila. This is found in the Intramuros district church records. It is said that the first one kept in Bagumbayan’s San Nicolas de Tolentino church before it was transferred to Intramuros. Unfortunately the Battle of Manila in 1945 destroyed this first image of the Black Nazarene when a bomb hit it. By then, the other sculpture was placed in the Quiapo church where some people thought it to be the original one. In the year 1650 Pope Innocent X gave his approval of the Black Nazarene for veneration as Sacramental. He also gave the permission to the Confraternity of the Most Holy Jesus Nazarene.      Filipino Catholics and those who relate to the Passion of Christ venerate the Black Nazarene. Most of them would relate their hardships to the struggles that were experienced by Jesus himself such the one presented in the image of the statue. Devotees clap their hands after the offering of mass at the shrine as a sign of homage.      Three processions take place each year when the Black Nazarene is taken out for veneration. The procession takes place on New Year’s Day, January 9 and Good Friday. January 9 processions commemorate the transferring of the Nazarene to Quiapo church. On that day, the image is carried out to the street in a carriage called the “andas” which means “to go forward” in Spanish. The devotees would walk barefoot and wear maroon colored clothes as an act of reminiscing Jesus when he went to Mount Calvary. The carriage is tied with a rope which men would pull. In the past only men were allowed to pull the ropes but recently female devotees joined in the act. The Catholics would touch the image hoping for a miracle to happen. Some people allegedly have even been reported to have had their diseases cured after contact with the Nazarene. Because of this, desperate devotees who can’t get near the statue would throw their towels at the guards requesting them to rub it on the image hoping that its miracles would rub in the cloth. The procession of the Black Nazarene on feast day is known to be a fatal one because of the heat, fatigue and the massive numbers of devotees reaching to millions.     Fortunately, when the number of devotees rose to 8 million, the route on the 9th January was altered to a much wider street located at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park. This is also the first place where the Nazarene was enshrined. At the end of the day, the statue is returned to the church. In contrast to this veneration, the other two commemoration of the Black Nazarene on New Year’s Day and Good Friday is a solemn one.
Having a dog means having a bunch of fur in every corner of your home and every sheet of cloth that you have. It is one of the obvious price of raising a dog. But who cares as long as you and your dog are living happily together. Although you might never bother to wear clothes with fur, the case could be different especially if you need to wear formal attire for a special event. You probably don’t want to appear as the fury guy or gal in any event right? The presence of fur in your suit or dress could appear a bit messy and dirty so you better have it cleaned right away.     Too often than not, removing fur from your clothes is much more difficult that people tell you. Once a cloth with fur will be washed together with other clothes, the fur remains and it can even transfer from one cloth to another, so how to actually remove fur effectively? Here are some of the best yet simple remedies that you can actually do in order to get rid of those excess fur.         1.    Packaging Tapes. You can also use scotch tapes as long as it is 2 inches wide. Hold the tape and pull a length that is enough to roll on the entire circumference of the tape tube. Glide or slide it to the portion where very can be visibly seen. You will then notice the fur will attach to the tape. Significantly you can also use this method like picking up the fur instead of entirely rolling the tape unto the surface of the clothes.          2.    Wet Cloth. Wipe the area where you can see the fur, it will then attached to the wet cloth, some fur once wet because heavy and then falls off on its own.         3.    Vacuum cleaner. If you have small nozzle for your vacuum cleaner that would be best for your need. Use the vacuum cleaner in getting all those unwanted fur in your clothes in no time.          4.    Treat your black clothes differently. Fur are most noticeable in black clothes, if you are washing your clothes, you should separate it from the others.      Keeping your clothes free from fur while having a dog could be tiring sometimes. The best way to save you clothes from that fur is to put your clothes in a plastic suit case or secure a room where your dog is not allowed to stay.
Japan’s stronghold in the Philippines was vital to the defense of their Southeast Asian flank. Because of this it was where they concentrated their forces which resulted in the most severe period of the Imperial’s invasion in World War II of the Philippines-the Battle of Bataan.  It is also written down in history as the largest surrender of the United States since the US Civil War.     On the 7th of December 1941 the same day that Pearl Harbor was attacked by Japan, U.S Philippine headquarters, naval and base camps in Zambales, Manila, Pampanga and Cavite were pounded by aircrafts based in Taiwan. The scattered remnants of the American forces tried to fight back in a struggle to seize airfields in Luzon to stop the Japanese air forces from landing but to no avail. They have also attacked Japanese ships bordered in Luzon. Nevertheless it did not delay the Japanese invasion. The Japanese Army increased their dominance when they neutralized the US bases in Philippines. They have gained for themselves air and naval fields taken from the US army for them to use and empower their invasion.     When the Japanese gained their supremacy in the air and naval bases, they started their massive assault on the US army’s line of defense on the shores called the beachheads. The beachheads were pushed back by the invaders. As General MacArthur realized that their strategy has failed he resorted to what they called the War Plan Orange-3 wherein the main goal is to focus on the defense of Bataan and Corregidor, the central plain in the island of Luzon. They were to retreat in a delaying manner towards Bataan and regroup there with all their forces and fight Japanese invaders for 6 months assuming that after that time relief and back up would get there from the United States. They were hopeful that by delaying the Japanese invasion by regrouping in Bataan it will distort the plans of the Japanese Imperial army and also give the United States ample time to prepare their Fleet with power and arrive at Bataan to the rescue. Little did they know that the US Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor was already crippled.      On December 22, 1941, the Philippine Army troops who were defending the beaches of Luzon were defeated. And in order to deceive their advancing enemies on the exact location of their major defense positions in the Bataan peninsula, the Americans placed one line of defense in Layac to fight and delay their enemies. It was where the Japanese and American soldiers met for the first time in WWII. The battles focused on delaying the Japanese army in order for MacArthur’s men to withdraw towards the Batan defense base went on from January 1-5, 1942.      The Japanese Imperial Army persisted in their advancement towards Bataan and Corregidor for three months resulting in four major battles written in history.  The first of these battles was called The Stand. The stand was mainly the battle of the defense of the Americans and Filipinos of the Abucay-Mauban line. It is composed of two defensive lines located across the Bataan peninsula. The Mauban line was located on the western side and the Abucay on the eastern. The Stand was a battle of night raids, hand to hand combats and infiltrations between Japan and the Philippine-American Army. The fight started on January 9 and ended on January 22, 1942 resulting in the defeat and abandonment of the Abucay-Mauban Line.     The second battle was a brief one. It is called the Battle of Trail 2. It has happened 4days after The Stand. Trail 2 was the line of defense hastily organized by General Bluemel which was successful in preventing the withdrawing US and Filipino from a major wipeout by the Japanese troops. The Japanese in their pursuit has found a gap to attack the withdrawing army with but was repelled in time by the trail2 line of defense.     The third Battle was called the Battle of Pockets after the intentions of the Japanese army to pocket their areas of defense. After the battle of Trail2 Japanese troops managed still to get through using other routes and gaps in the withdrawing army.  The battle was marked by Capt. Santos, 1st Division’s actions which outsmarted and countered the strategies of the Japanese troops. He was nicknamed the “hero of pockets” for this and was promoted as major. The battle lasted from January 23 to February 22. On February 8, General Homma tried to order his men to stop their offensive operations seeing that they were getting closer to defeat but it was too late because most of the other divisions were already in contact with their enemies. The battle resulted in the USAFFE’s re-occupation of most positions that were taken from them by the Japanese Imperial Army. The Japanese had not yet been defeated but it was their turn to withdraw their forces.     Meanwhile, on the west side of the Southern coast of Bataan, Japanese troops and USAFFE met on a battle known as the Battle of Points. The fighting lasted from January 23 to February 13, 1942. It was a remarkable battle because of the 2000 Japanese troops deployed there, only 43 made it alive and wounded. In that battle sailors were ordered to make noises and wear colorful uniforms in order to tempt the Japanese troops to shoot at them. This strategy revealed the hiding positions of the Japanese in the trees where the USAFFE army attacked them.     General MacArthur with family and staff officers left Corregidor on March 12 , 1942. He went to Mindanao and from there flew to Australia where he made his famous promise “ I Shall Return” to the Filipinos. Because of this, the USAFFE changed its name to USFIP( US Forces in the Philippines) commanded by Lt.Gen. Wainwright IV.     The second attack of the Japanese Imperial Army on Bataan then began. With the intention of completely destroying the American strongholds, Japanese General Headquarters sent more troops, aircrafts and artilleries. With only the capture of Bataan as their campaign, the Japanese forces arrived and backed the forces of General Homma. They aimed straight for Bataan and charged the defense lines of Americans and Filipinos ranks after ranks. This final assault bombarded the USFIP bases, neutralized I Corps and II Corps and destroyed communications between the commanders of the Bataan base and their lines of Defense. On April 6, the main defense of Bataan has collapsed and refugees started filling all roads. Some soldiers were even seen fleeing along with them. April 8 then marked the end of resistance for the commander on Bataan, Gen. King. He proposed for capitulation and on April 9, 1942 he met and negotiated with Maj. Gen. Kameichiro Nagano which lasted for hours and ended in the announcement of the surrender of the weary and embattled alliance of the Americans and the Filipinos thus, marking the Falling of Bataan in history.     The Allied forces then, with no more strength to fight back were forcibly ordered by the Japanese Imperial Army on the famous Death March to transfer them from Bataan to Camp O'Donnell and be locked as prisoners of war. Approximately 75,000 soldiers marched on foot the 128km distance resulting in the death of about 10,000 soldiers. Besides that, what makes the Battle of Bataan famous is the amazing teamwork and camaraderie which the Americans and Filipinos applied in their battle against the Japanese army.
Vintas are traditional boats originating from the southern island called Mindanao in the Philippines. The Bajau and Moros of Sulu and Zamboanga created these boats. They are also called lepa-lepa or sakayan and were used since ancient times to transport people and goods to and from different islands. In those times the Bajaus and people from Basilan and Tawi-tawi used these boats as their homes. It was said that they seldom went to land except for the task of burying their dead. This is also why they became known as great swimmers and people with great knowledge of the sea and oceans. The Vintas are also used in regattas. Regattas are a series of races between rowboats such as the vintas.     They were made from dug-out canoes and installed with double outriggers. But the most remarkable traits of these boats are the colorful patterns of its sails. Although each boat has a variety of colors, every one of them follows a certain vertical pattern. Each color is separated from the other in a vertical fashion. The colors used in every line represent the culture and the past of the Muslims. It is because of these vessels that Zamboanga is famous for.     Originally, Vinta was the term used for a Moro dance. This was a celebration reminiscing the time when Filipinos migrated to the archipelago. The dance was performed with moves imitating the movements of the boats. The dancers would do this by standing on top of poles and balancing themselves as though they were Vintas sailing in the Ocean.      The Vinta basically signifies the general evolution of Sulu towards development. It is the island’s symbol as the maneuvering of the craft requires careful steering because of stormy waters. The people of Sulu were believed to have used these boats in the past in search of their promised land. They believed that this land was given to them as inheritance from their forefathers.     Vinta represents a lot to the people and it has many uses in terms of tourism and foreign attraction. It has become a great icon for Filipinos and some institutions in the Philippines. The PAREF schools, for example has used the Vinta as a symbol to their buildings. In other places such as the picturesque Paseo del Mar the Vintas are used as one of their additional attractions. It was the Department of Tourism with the support of the City Government which has recently launched the “Vinta Sailing at Paseo”. This official launching is one of the country’s efforts to promote the culture of Zamboanga City. In this effort the colorful vintas are used both to attract tourists and also to create programs that will preserve the culture.     With a low price of P50, visitors can now enjoy a 30-minute tour around the Paseo del Mar riding the vintas. This is available every Saturday and Sunday with at least 5 boats ready to for a tourist to ride on. Tourists can also observe regattas during the Fiesta Pilar.      The Vinta is a representation of Zamboanga’s history and culture. But it is also one of the symbols that represent the Philippines as it signifies migration and the colorful traditions of the country.
The protagonist of the story is Juan Crisostomo Ibarra. 7 years away from Philippines, he returns after studying in Europe. To celebrate his comeback, family friend Captain Tiago throws a party for him. Friars and influential leaders attended. But one of the friars Don Damaso belittled Ibarra on that night.      The following day Ibarra visited Maria Clara, Captain Tiago’s daughter who is also his fiancé. Before Ibarra left though, a Civil Guard, Lieutenant Guevara, revealed to him how Ibarra’s father Don Rafaelo died. Don Rafaelo was accused by Don Damaso as a heretic because he did not attend the Sacraments. Aside from that, there was an incident where Don Rafaelo helped in a fight between a child and tax collector. When the latter died Don Rafaelo was accused and brought to jail where he died of an illness.      Despite all that, Ibarra did not plan on taking revenge. Instead he went on with his and Don Rafelo’s plan to put up a school. They believed that education is the key to success for the country. On the school’s inauguration, a hired killer attempted to kill Ibarra but he was saved by a man named Elias. The same man had warned him of this earlier. The hired killer then met with an accident and got killed.      The next day, Ibarra held a luncheon where Damaso gate-crashed and insulted him and his father. Ibarra ignored him at first but at the slander of his father he could not resist it and he lunged in an attempt to stab Damaso. But he failed and as a result was excommunicated. Damaso also convinced Tiago not to marry his daughter to Ibarra.      Another party was held at the house of Tiago announcing the future wedding of Clara and Linares. Elias used this opportunity to help Ibarra escape the prison. Ibarra sneaked to speak with Maria where he accused her of betraying him by surrendering his letters to the jury. But she explained that she was blackmailed to do so in return for her mother’s letters who she never saw since birth.      In a shootout, Maria Clara had thought that Ibarra was shot and killed. So overcome with sorrow, she went into the nunnery and got admitted by Damaso. Little did she know that it was Elias who got shot.      Christmas Eve came at the time when Elias opened his eyes to see himself wounded fatally wounded. It was his rendezvous with Ibarra. But it was Basilio who came holding his dead mother Sisa. Sisa lost her insanity when she found out that her children (Crispin and Basilio) were being hunted by the sacristan mayor on accusations of theft.      Elias knew of his imminent death and instructed Basilio to burn his and Sisa’s body to ashes. He then told him to dig if no one came and he’ll find gold to support him to school. Before his last breath he advised Basilio to persist in dreams of freedom for the motherland.      As for the epilogue, Tiago turned into an opium addict frequenting the opium house. Maria Clara succeeded in becoming a nun. But the Friar Salvi regularly raped her regularly. And on a stormy night, a beautiful insane lady went on top of the convent and cursed the heavens for what befell her. The lady could not be identified, but rumor has it that it was Maria Clara.

Taking a bath is a necessity for any person. Taking baths regularly have great effects on the body especially when it comes to proper hygiene.  Washing your body removes dirt and even germs that may cause skin irritation and other forms of ailments. However there are also concerns when it comes to taking baths such as the drying of skin. What actually makes the skin dry and how can it be prevented?      Having a glowing and fully nourished skin is such an asset. It shows how healthy a person is and how he or she takes good care of his or her body. Of course dull and dry skin is not an indication of a healthy lifestyle. It can make a person look older than they seem. Taking baths regularly can indeed make your skin dry because it also removes the moisture within your skin. However choosing between soap or body bar and body wash can actually solve your problem.     Body bars or beauty bars are among the oldest and the traditional products used during bath time. It has been present even centuries ago. It is convenient to use and comes in affordable prices. Several variants of soap have been already produced to cater the needs of every person. There are beauty bars made especially for people having sensitive skin. These are often termed mas hypo allergenic products. With the convenience of using beauty bars, is there something special about body wash that can actually change the minds of the people who have been used to soaps.      Unlike beauty bars, body wash or shower gels are actually great if you have dry skin problems. The chemical components used in making shower gels are lighter and more delicate compared to those of beauty bars. This is the main reason why shower gels can totally moisturize your skin even if you use it every day. Although beauty bars have been present for ages, shower gels have its benefits that any person would surely consider.      A body wash unlike soap can be stored in a pump-type container making it really handy. Its scent stays longer in your skin unlike soap does. It produces more amount of lather, making you enjoy your bath more. It moisturizes your skin and it also comes in different variants depending on use. It is not that expensive and it can be bought in any supermarket stores just like soaps. Unlike soap it does not have any residues that can actually make your skin flaky.
If you are fond of shopping online for sure you have come across posts or pages selling bags, shoes, jewelries, cosmetics and other sort of trendy things. These items became really salable because sellers would claim that they have way cheaper prices compared to those items sold in malls. A buyer with a limited amount of money would sure go for a budget-friendly deal believing that he or she would get the same item being sold in malls. Other seller would even label their products as “authentic overruns” or “original overruns”.      What else should a buyer know if an item is labeled as an authentic overrun aside from the lower price it has? The truth is there is actually no such thing as “authentic overrun”. It’s just between an original one and a fake one. Yes, overruns are considered fake or counterfeit products. In support to the overrun claim, others would say that the products they are selling did not match or pass the quality standards and so they are being sold in cheaper prices. These products are still made from the original material but has some sort of imperfections and are not included in items delivered in malls and other authorized distributors. This claim sounds really convincing right?      In counterfeit items or imitations there are still classifications in terms of quality. The one considered to be the closest to the original is called an overrun, next is a replica, and it is followed by class A, class B and so on. There are some items that are really sturdy and have great quality, almost the same with the original. The price difference does matter, and if you are going to conduct a research, almost all online stores have the same price range for items. This means, their products came from the same source or the supplier for these items is the same.      There is nothing wrong in buying these kinds of stuff, who would want to spend more money if can spend less and have the item that you really like? However it is best to know the value of what you are buying for. Don’t get fooled by those sellers telling you that they are selling original items. Also, the price range for overrun items are almost the same, so don’t get fooled if you saw an item that you like in a much higher price compared to what you saw, thinking that, that  must be the original one. If the price is 50%-70% lower compared to malls, then it must have been an overrun or a replica.
Nowadays, people are becoming busier with their work and other sorts of responsibilities. When you have just started working, chances are you spend majority of your time working and earning a living. But it is also important to distress yourself from so much stress from the demands of your work. But how can you do it if you have very limited time left to enjoy? Food has been one of the key comforts of the people at this present time.      Wherever and whenever you go to a certain restaurant you will surely get to see a chicken on their menu. Chicken is served in all restaurants, of course except for vegans. It is one of the most handy to cook among all other meat. You can have it fried, serve it in salads, or have it as a soup and even in barbecues. People consume chicken as much as they consume rice. Aside from being versatile in terms of recipes, chicken can be cooked easily. Most of the chicken recipes do not require too much time in terms of preparation. Also, it is always available in the market, rain or shine. It is available whole year round. It doesn’t have to depend on any season at all.     Almost all are eating chicken but do you know or have you already asked yourself on which is the healthiest part of the chicken? In terms of being healthy, the breast part would surely take the win. Why it is considered to be the healthiest has something to do with its structure and component. Unlike other chicken parts, the breast is mainly composed of lean meat. It does not have any extra fat and is a good source of protein. It isn’t difficult to prepare and require little or less time compared to other parts because it does not have bones at all. Although the breast may seem not that appealing it is the healthiest part of the chicken. It is best for those who are on their diet. You will not feel guilty at all after consuming a whole chicken breast.      Now for the tastiest part, it is none other than the thighs. The drumstick is indeed popular but the thighs have tastier meat. The wings might also be a good appetizer however it contains less meat compared to the thighs, making it as appetizer but not the main dish. Chicken thighs have tastier and juicer meat compared to all others. It has the right amount of meat and it has bones to give it enough structure and for you to bite on.      However if you are a drumstick person then go for it, choose the one that makes you happy. If you are conscious with your diet then go for the breast part. In the end, it will depend on your own preference. Rest, assured that your chicken will always be there for you no matter what.
