Nowadays social influence became really stronger through the use of social media. One of the best examples of this is when a particular show or movie has been repeatedly shared and liked by your social media friends and thus you became interested about it even though it is not actually the type of movies that you would like to watch. You tried it because it became viral and made several rounds over Facebook or Twitter.
If you are reading this, you should probably fall on either of these two reasons. First you often see your friends watching this show and you got really curious about it but not that totally convinced to try, so you keep on searching for reasons. Second, you are probably done watching this series and you got disappointed or somewhat you disgusted and you want to share the same sentiments as to why you should have not watched this show.
So let me enumerate the reasons why.
Suicide is a very sensitive topic yet it has been justified lightly by Hannah’s experience with her classmates and other friends. It is as if you can never feel bad or despise a person why he or she decided to take away his or her life and thus those people who made Hannah felt that way should succumb to their guilt or better yet commit suicide as well. In such manner, this series seemed to promote suicide rather than avoid it.
There are indeed lapses and mistakes made by the people around Hannah which was deliberately portrayed, such as her peers, classmates, significant others, parents and even teachers. However blaming these people is just one side of the story. The other side, which the lead role failed to fulfill, is one of the major reasons of her untimely death. It has been repeatedly discussed that the other actors were wrong in blaming her because of her decision. And that Hannah shouldn’t be blamed about it. But to make things straight, who among these people decided to give up? Did Hannah realize that these people were also going through something? The thing is, the creator of this story allowed Hannah to die which is a sort of encouragement or a positive regard to commit suicide.
The social responsibility of making suicide as a topic must be taken with caution. Remember the incident wherein two students tried to perform the things they saw in the movie Fifty Shades of Gray and end up being dead? Now think of Hannah’s story and come to think of it? How many innocent minds can be corrupted with this idea? The story has been dramatized mainly to attract viewers and not to make a positive impact to the society.
This movie is extremely relevant to its viewers because its setting is a common social issue such as puberty, peer pressure, substance abuse, drugs, rape, and lastly bullying. Bullying is very much significant because at a certain point in your life you will experience both, being the bully and being bullied. It could have been great grounds to handle the issue of suicide because of its relevance; however this series just failed to give a progressive impact to its viewers which will make you disgust it even more.
